Student Work

The surest road to hell in a classroom is to stick to the lesson plan, no matter what.”

– Elliot Eisner, The Arts and the Creation of Mind

The student artwork in this gallery does not fit into any of the lesson plans I included on this site. These students proposed their own projects, ran into happy accidents, worked through lunch and pushed the boundaries of assigned projects.

One student, Mateo, found inspiration in a mosquito that met its end on his wet canvas. He included the insect in his final piece: an imagined portrait called The Politician. Another student, Erin, made photographs by pointing her camera at a broken mirror and photographing the fractured reflections. The effect reminds us of André Kertész’s Broken Plate images, but Erin’s technique starts with a pristine negative.
